Late Bloomers

Last night I was struggling to find a movie that interested me. I love watching movies, and sometimes, it’s just the best way to unwind from a busy day.

I came across Late Bloomers on Prime, I’ve never heard of this movie before, and I didn’t recognize any of the actors either, but somehow it had a good vibe. The movie was released in 2023, so pretty new.

Late Bloomers tells the story of Louise (Karen Gillan), a 28 year old girl from the Brooklyn area in New York, and aspiring musician. From the beginning of the movie it’s very obvious the Louise is struggling with life in general, a broken heart from a previous relationship, and a family dynamics with unresolved issues. At the beginning of the story you can also sense that despite Louise’s brokenness, dwells a wonderful, and beautiful human being craving acceptance, opportunity, and love.

By fate, she crosses paths with Antonina (Margaret Sophie Stein), a bad tempered, argumentative, and uncooperative elderly Polish woman who speaks no English at all. Louise speaks no Polish, so in this life encounter they figure out a way to communicate… through the language of understanding, respect, love, but mainly by learning to see each other through their brokenness, and dreams.

The story goes beyond the relationship between Louise and Antonina. It digs deeply into family dynamics, and our relationship with elderly parents, and what it means to foster relationships with them, and often care for them.

A soul filled film that explores what being human is all about, and also, what it really means to grow up.

This film makes you laugh, ponder, and will definitely make you cry. I loved the story, and the characters, I thought it was a beautiful movie. ❤️
