The Gift of Tomorrows

“You’ll be back, soon you’ll see, you’ll remember you belong to me.  You’ll be back, time will tell, you’ll remember that I served you well…”  Hamilton

As long as we have tomorrows, there is hope.

A week ago today started out a little cloudy for me, metaphorically speaking.  Earlier in the week I paid a surprise visit to the emergency room which ended with a series of doctors appointments.  Boo.  The whole experience and the uncertainty of it all, diminished my moods.  That doesn’t happen too often, but this really got me.  That weekend I ended up having to cancel all holidays plans and parties I had and it made me feel a little blue.  I stayed in my pajamas all Saturday and did nothing else other than watch movies and nap.  It ended up being very healing not only for my body but my overall well being.

Netflix was my friend that day and we kept each other company quite well.  I decided to start exploring all their movies and series, and it was like opening a Pandora box… or a chocolate box, whichever you prefer, you never know what you will get. 😉  That Saturday I watched three movies, and all of them were very good in their own ways.  Some made me laugh and one gave me all the feels I didn’t know I would be feeling that day.

Movie #1

LIFE FATHER.  A sweet comedy about a daughter (Kristen Bell) and father (Kelsey Grammer) reconnecting after twenty plus years of being apart after her parent’s divorce.  The story deeply focuses in our technology driven world that causes us to lose touch with the people around us.  “Like Father” is one of those casual Friday or Saturday night movies to watch at home when you just want something light to feed the soul.

Movie #2

THE OTHER WOMAN.  This movie made me cry real tears.  Although the script is a bit complicated and I didn’t agree with how all the relationships untangled, it honestly portrays the challenges and suffering associated with loss and the struggles that come when people go through tragic life events together.  Heart wrenching but also uplifting.

Movie #3

MISS STEVENS.  This movie was recommended to me by my Theater loving kid and since I was on a movie run already, I thought, why not give it a chance.  The story revolves around a High School English  teacher who offers to be a chaperone for three students at a drama competition.  Many things happen on their trip, plenty of self discovery moments but one of the most powerful scenes was the moment Miss Stevens starts describing her relationship with her theater loving mom who is now deceased and in her monologue she talks about the way her gifts impacted all those around her.

Go ahead, call me a movie critic now.  That’s what a lazy day at home does to you. 😉

Sunday afternoon I had made plans to accompany my friend Nicole on a Girl Scout trip to Rosemont to celebrate Christmas.  I was determined not to let my moods and aches and pains get in the way of our fun and I am so glad I was strong enough that day to go on this little field trip of ours because it quickly snapped me back to sweet reality and all was good in my world again.

We started the day with lunch at the Sugar Factory which included many sugary and amaaaazing looking drinks!!!  Bella ordered a triple patty burger which was the biggest burger I’ve seen in my life.  The question here is, “how can a child of her size eat like that?” Like mother like daughter!

After lunch and picture taking with a quite creepy Santa that offered to tickle the girls for a smile (yikes!), the girls went ice skating.  The day could not have been more beautiful that day.  It was a balmy 40+ degrees kind of day and sunny and the girls fully enjoyed their time on the ice.  After a few falls, chuckles and Julie exclaiming she’d rather get a full time job than going ice skating again because she couldn’t feel her toes anymore, haha, we ended the day with hot chocolate at a local restaurant by the ice skating rink and blasting Hamilton’s “You’ll be back” in the car on the way back home.  It was great!!!

I’m so thankful for all the memories Bella has created with her Girl Scout troop and for the gift of those friendships.  Most of the girls have known each other since Kindergarten and although they don’t all always hang out on a regular basis due to school commitments and other friend’s groups, they always seem to find their way back to each other and when they spend time together is like time has never passed.  For a Senior Girl Scout group with girls in High School, having seven girls still be part of it, it’s quite an accomplishment.  Two of the girls couldn’t make it to the Christmas celebration last week, but I know they are all looking forward to the many adventures they will have in 2019!  Girls Scouts… you rock!!!
